Nothing remains constant in life. Life is always changing. We live in a transit where things are always moving, changing and flowing. Things just never remain the same.
It is true; you can never step twice in a river and touch the same place. This is so because the flow of the river is constant; it is always moving – forever changing. It’s the same of life. Once yesterday has passed you will never ever see that exact moment again. Today will bring new experiences and so will tomorrow. Nothing remains the same!
The idea here is to prepare and expect changes in all areas of life. The first step is to admit to yourself that even the most stable and trusted facets of your life are not completely under your control. Your friends, family members and people in general will change and so will you. Your business venture(s) will go through periods of transition. Things, whether good or bad do not stay the same for long.
When you allow yourself to anticipate changes and you understand that life will go on even if changes occur you prevent yourself from getting bogged down by strong emotions such as; shock, fear, disappointment, sadness and anger. Even too much excitement is not always good for us.
But why do people fear change if change is inevitable? I believe we do because Human Beings love to feel comfortable and safe. We love being in that comfort zone. We love security. We will live in the same community for years. We will cling to a job for years and believe we will always have it. When change happens suddenly we then experience a crisis. There is a crisis because we were set in our own ways.
We perceive the change, especially if it is not in line with what we want as something negative. We don’t want it because we have become so attached to our comfort zones and familiarity that anything different triggers fear and anxiety.
The question is not whether life will change, the question is when. Are you going to be flexible and adapt to change when it happens? Will you be willing to accept and embrace it while looking at different options? When we adapt to problems that arise and quickly find solutions the problems inevitably become smaller. We have to learn and choose to become like water making its way through cracks. If we abandon our rigidity and choose to adjust in our circumstances we will find our way around or through anything.
Flexibility is what life demands from us since life is always changing. Companies for example that can’t adapt to new changes in the market will go out of business faster than air oozes out of a punctured tyre.
Do you remember floppy disks? Well, think about the companies that made those floppy disks. Do you think they are still making floppy disks today? Well, what if they were still making these devices hoping customers would still purchase and use to store data even in light of many technological advances? What do you think their profit margins would be like now? Do you think these companies would continue to exist and flourish if they didn’t adapt and change?
The same is required of us. When changes come if we don’t adapt we will succumb to problems and die in our own ways and we simply cannot afford for that to happen.
“Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup it becomes cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in to a teapot it becomes the teapot. Become flexible and adaptable in your daily life and problems will roll of your shoulders.” Bruce Lee
