In Charles Schulz’s comic strip Peanut, Schulz captured the feeling of many people. In one illustration Charlie Brown said to Linus, “life is just too much for me. I’ve been confused from the day I was born. I think the whole trouble is that we’re thrown into life too fast. We’re not really prepared.” Linus responded by asking, “What did you want…a chance to warm up?” Charles M. Schulz, The Complete Peanuts, Vol. 5: 1959-1960
There is no warm up for life, no dress rehearsal, yet that’s the way many people seem to be treating it. Each one of us goes on the stage of life without preparation and we have to figure it out. It can be messy with a lot of mistakes, failures and disappointment but we still need to give it our best from the very start. We don’t get a rehearsal for life. We have to do the best we can do in each moment.
Sadly, most people allow life to just happen to them. They float along trying to make a living, trying to make ends meet. Instead of being proactive, they react to life and before they know it most of their lives are behind them. It is at that point that they begin to realize that they should have had a strategic plan for their lives and they experience a sense of regret because they know deep down that life had much more to offer.
We can all learn from those who have gone before us so we donat make the same mistakes. We can also learn from people who have done what we want to do. We can carefully study people who have lived their lives with purpose, vision and direction and see what they did differently and try to emulate those traits.
The problem with most of us is that we don’t spend enough time discovering who we really are and developing ourselves. Oscar winning actress Reese Witherspoon once said, “Many people worry so much about managing their careers but rarely spend half that much energy managing their lives. I want to make my life, not just my job, the best it can be. The rest will work itself out.” American actress, 1976
If you plan your life well your career will come on well. Most people spend more time planning for Christmas or their vacation than their lives but it is important that we invest as much time in our personal development.
